Irish people are known for their musical prowess. Think of The Cranberries, U2, The Pogues, The Corrs. The Boomtown Rats, and The Dubliners even. Perhaps the group known as Celtic Thunder will be said in the same breath as these other internationally famous Irish bands after their stunning performance of Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound of Silence”.
The song is covered a lot, especially since A Cappella group Pentatonix released a beautiful version a few years ago. But Celtic Thunder brings their own spirit to the classic track and really make it their own.
The most covered song in the world is “Yesterday”, originally recorded by The Beatles, but “The Sound of Silence” must be up there.
Celtic Thunder manages to put their own spin on the classic track, which is necessary for a song so famous and so commonly covered.
The band themselves is made up of five Irish men, although two take centre stage with their guitars and voices. They formed in 2007 and have been showcasing their incredible talent ever since, slowly climbing up the charts and making a name for themselves.
Don’t be fooled by the fact they look a bit like a discount Westlife, this group has real talent, and it comes across in this song. Accompanied by a full orchestra, there is no better way to perform such an iconic song, and make it your own. It is almost easy to forget the original Simon & Garfunkel version when you get lost in the Celtic Thunder version!
You can tell that their heart and soul is in every note they play and every word they sing. The video has gathered over six and a half million views, and it is clear why.
These talented guys are sure to take off soon, so beat your friends to say “I knew them before they were big”.
