Six months ago Mamoudou Gassama was living in his home country, Mali. He dreamed of following in the footsteps of many of his friends by building a new life in Paris. Now, six months later and Mamoudou is a hero in France who he has met the President.
22-year-old Mamoudou was an undocumented immigrant who moved to Paris in search of a better life. What he didn’t expect was to become a have-a-go hero.
Mamoudou Gassama was about to become globally known
On Saturday afternoon, Gassama was walking home from the famous Gare du Nord railway station. As he walked out of the station he spotted a crowd of panicked people at the bottom of a tall building.
When Mamoudou approached, he realised that 4 storeys up the building there was a young boy dangling from a balcony. Without a moment’s hesitation and putting ‘health and safety’ aside, Gassama began to scale the building to reach the 4-year-old in danger.
“I did not think of the floors, I did not think of the risk, I did it because it’s a child. I really like children.”
When news of Mamoudou Gassama’s heroic ‘Spiderman’ like heroism went viral, the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo posted on her Twitter account: “Congratulations to Mamoudou Gassama for his brave act that helped save a child’s life last night. I had the pleasure to talk with him today by phone, to thank him warmly.”
Hildago also stated; “his heroic gesture is an example for all citizens and that the City of Paris will obviously be keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France.”
But it doesn’t stop there, Gassama’s heroic deed also caught the attention of President Emmanuel Macron.
The President of France was so impressed by Mamoudou’s bravery that he wanted to meet him in person. The two talked about life and Gassama told the President why he wanted to move to France.
But Macron wanted to go a step further, for Gassama’s selfless act. The French President wanted to help Mamoudou out – that’s why he awarded him with citizenship.
The undocumented immigrant had gone from following his dreams to becoming a French hero.
He’s no longer an immigrant hoping to go under the radar, he is now a known figure in France and an inspiration to most. Not only that, but he’s living legally in a country he dreamed of moving to.
