The long winter season in Greenland can be quite testing. Especially for the stray animals that live in the area. The icy cold chills and snowstorms can last well into the spring season. This means cats and dogs have to fend for themselves in the near-fatal conditions. Finding shelter and safety is a must for these creatures.
In the middle of April, a young tabby cat was rescued from the streets of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. The cat was brought to the area shelter Dyrenes Venner. Dyrenes Venner roughly translates to “Protector of Animals in Greenland”.
Inunnguaq Christiansen, a board member at Dyrenes Venner said, “Stray and lost cats have a really tough time during the winters up here,”
“With freezing temperatures and frequent storms, they often have to seek shelter in the basements of older buildings.”
Volunteers named the adorable kitty Ulla. From the moment they found her, it was made crystal clear how happy she was to be safe, warm and grateful for the rescue.

Ulla loved nothing more than cosying up with her rescuers as well as making bonds with other cats, dogs and even the guinea pigs in the shelter. Ulla had definitely made herself at home.
“She’s very lovely and caring, I brought my own dog, Yaris, to the shelter one time and Ulla immediately jumped on the cage.”
Ulla was hiding a big secret of her own
Ulla seemed to have a lot of maternal instincts for all the animals around her. Her behaviour grew more unusual and she started gaining weight.

As weeks passed, Ulla was gaining weight at an alarming rate. More specifically, gaining weight in her stomach area.
“Upon closer inspection, it was only around the belly area, and her nipples were getting pretty stiff.”
The team took Ullah to the veterinary facility in Greenland where she received an ultrasound. They found out that Ulla was about to become a mother.

Everyone was in shock – including Ulla! The cat’s pregnancy reaction was an absolute gem.
The news of Ulla’s pregnancy came as a surprise to her rescuers, but the tabby cat seemed pretty stunned also.
Tone Frank, a board member at the shelter managed to snap a few photos of Ulla’s ultrasound. But the picture that left everyone in stitches was when Tone managed to capture the cat’s pregnancy reaction. It truly is a golden moment of comedy.

“The pictures were so funny I decided to post them on /r/aww during my lunch break to see if a couple of people would share my amusement,” Christiansen said.
“A few hours later and the post was exploding with 90,000 upvotes and over 900 comments. I spent the entire evening trying to reply to people … We got some really sweet PMs [private messages] from people thanking us for our efforts; it really lifted the mood for the volunteers at the shelter.”
This cat’s pregnancy reaction has gone viral online and even helped find her a home.

“She’s been living at a foster family since Thursday on a trial period, and they really want to keep her and all of her kittens. With any luck, it’s going to work out for them.”
Now, Ulla enjoys spending her time bonding with her new cat sibling, Sofus, while preparing for the arrival of her new kittens.
Dyrenes Venner posted on their Facebook page, “They’re doing quite well, and the family has patience and understanding that Ulla needs a little extra space right now,”

Soon, Ulla will be able to give birth in the comfort of a home rather than the cramped and chaotic shelter. Furthermore, the kittens will be welcomed into a loving home with lots of space.
