Being in the military is hard. Real hard. But something we don’t talk about enough is how hard it is to be away from your family for such long periods of time. This military mom from California had missed all of her teen daughter’s track meets this season, but she had a surprise up her sleeve.
Capt. Erika Woodson had been deployed in Alaska for six months. But, her 13-year-old daughter Jada McGee is an avid runner and was performing at a track event. Erika decided to surprise her there.
As Jada was on the finishing straight, her mom stepped out onto the track. “Coming down the home straight I was excited because I was in first place,” Jada said. “And I saw my mom close to the finish line so it made me start running faster. She was putting her hands up and clapping and I was like, ‘Oh shoot, that’s mom.'”
It was the first time they had seen each other in six months, and the separation hit them both hard. “Being apart from my children and not being able to be here for their activities is really hard,” said mom Erika.
The emotions ran high as mom and daughter hugged on the track. The teen track star was obviously overjoyed that her mom came to watch her race. Check it out in the video below. What’s more, Jada came first in her race. She is a true talent.
However, now mom is back, they plan to train together all summer. Hopefully, Jada can keep getting first-place finishes, and she and her mom can spend some time together.
