US Soldier Reunited With French Love 75 Years After They Met In WW2

By - 14th June 2019

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. Well this couple were apart for 75 years after meeting when US veteran Kara Troy (K.T.) Robbins was stationed in Nazi-occupied France. Now, the couple is reunited after 75 years apart.

In 1944, K.T. was stationed in Briey, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in north-eastern France. While there, he met a girl called Jeannine. The 18-year-old French woman stole his heart, and the pair were in love.

However, their romance was cut short. After just two months together, he was rushed to fight on the Eastern Front. They never saw each other again. Both K.T. and Jeannine got married, but they never forgot about each other.

When a French film crew were filming footage of US veterans who had been in France for this year’s D-Day celebrations, they noticed K.T. had a photo of a French woman. He told them that he would love to see her again, but acknowledged that 75 years had passed. “I probably won’t see her. She is no doubt dead,” he said.

That was not the case. France 2 TV station tracked down Jeannine, now 92.

“When he left in the truck, I cried, of course, I was very sad.

“I wish after the war he hadn’t returned to America.”

Reunited At Last

The TV station arranged for the two to be reunited in an emotional film. Jeannine had learned English after her love had left, in the hope that he would return. When they met, K.T. said “I always loved you. You never got out of my heart.”

The pair had to part again so soon so that K.T. could go to the D-Day celebrations in Normandy. But they vowed to keep in touch.
