Sibling rivalries are not an uncommon thing. But did you know that there’s some scientific evidence to prove that having a sister is highly beneficial to you?

It turns out that, even though you might not agree, a female sibling could be the answer to life’s problems down the line. Older or younger, it doesn’t matter, just having them in your life is a benefit.

Yes, you heard that right, having a sister as a sibling is apparently a big perk in life… This may be the information to rattle a few family members but here us out.

The results of a 2010 study were published in The Journal of Family Psychology.

The study involved examining 400 families with multiple siblings; one of whom was between the ages of 10-14. They found that having a sister promoted positive mental health in their siblings.

The results also showed these brothers and sisters also had a greater capacity to empathise, resolve conflicts and communicate.

A professor at the university’s School of Family Life and lead author, Laura Padilla-Walker, said that even with all the fighting between the siblings, “as long as they have affection, the positive will win out”.

Are sibling fights healthy?

When brothers and sisters fight, they must learn to regulate emotions. These skills are crucial for later in life. Even when they argue, it has been proven that life with a brother or sister is less lonely.

Though it will probably come as no surprise, it’s been said that girls talk and are more communicative than boys. But if you’re a boy with a sister, you’re more likely to talk through your problems in life.

Fear not, ladies! There’s good news for you too.

Sure, boys who grew up with sisters are better communicators with women in general, that’s one of their blessed perks. But what was most interesting is that the study found that after a sibling’s parents have passed away, sisters will go the extra mile to try and keep the family together.

The moral of the story? Don’t worry about the arguments, blips and hiccups you may have with your brothers and/or sisters. They’re minor bumps in the road that help you grow as a person. Siblings last a lifetime so keep them close by and let your bond grow stronger.
