Photographing animals is a skill. You have to gain their trust, learn their behavioral patterns, become one with your surroundings. That’s before you even take the photo! Then you have to think about composition, movement, depth of field, and so many other things. But, if you’re lucky, you may get the perfect shot. And we think Japanese photographer mamekoro51 managed to get some pretty perfect shots of this baby meerkat!
The wildlife photographer was visiting Inokashira Natural Cultural Park in Musashino City, Tokyo to take some pictures. When she got to the meerkat enclosure, she noticed that the family had given birth to some cute little pups. She knew she had to snap a pic of them at once!
But, there was just one problem. The baby meerkat was so shy! It didn’t want to come out at all. Eventually, with a lot of patience, it got used to the photographer’s presence and started playing. She got the most beautiful shots!
Meerkats live with their families, in groups called “mobs” or “clans”. These usually consist of around 20 meerkats, but can be as big as 50! Mothers give birth to litters of pups, and the group teaches them life skills. Need to know how to de-sting a scorpion so you can eat it? Mama will tell you. Meerkats put family first, which is one reason people love them so much.
Tokyo Zoo is famed for its conservation of Japanese animals, especially native squirrels and Mandarin ducks. However, this meerkat might just be the cutest animal there! If you’re ever in the area, be sure to check out the botanical gardens and ponds. They’re all unique to Japan, and very beautiful.
