We all want to do our best to help others. Whether that’s being kind to other people or helping struggling dogs, you do what you can. Rebecca Lynch tries to help dogs wherever she goes, and for whatever reason. This time, she was on holiday and had space in her car. So, she dropped by a high-kill shelter in the hopes of saving a dog. But she didn’t expect what would happen next.
Last week, Rebecca and her husband Kevin were on holiday in Savannah, Georgia. They were on their way back to their home in Florida. But, Rebecca saw a dog-shaped space on their back seats.
Kevin Lynch and I just had a wonderful, memory-making weekend in Savannah with some of our dearest friends. On our way…
“I know that Georgia has a lot of rural, high-kill shelters and I knew I wanted to save the neediest dog from a shelter before I went home,” Rebecca said. “I had space in my car and wanted to help.”
A friend had told her about a dog in such a high-kill shelter that was at risk of being euthanized. Lizzy is a terrier with heartworms, a broken leg, and a litter of puppies inside her. That’s right, Lizzy was pregnant.
Rebecca knew she had to help. she made up a bed in the back of her car, picked up Lizzy, and stayed in the back with her as her husband drove home.
“About an hour in, she finally relaxed and rubbed her little head into my hand while I pet her,” Rebecca said. “Once she felt safe and comfortable, she decided it was time. She started panting and she got restless; I told my husband, ‘I think she’s in labor!'”
They changed direction to the nearest vet, but not before Rebecca helped Lizzy give birth to her first puppy. Five more little Lizzies arrived at the vet’s. All six puppies are doing well. Lizzy even has a clean bill of health now, despite her time in the high-kill shelter.
“Lizzy is a doll. Bless her heart, with all that she’s been through in her short life, she is so loving and trusting,” Rebecca said. “She is a gentle and loving soul. Pretty remarkable.”
The surprise birth seems like a miracle now, and Rebecca may have saved seven lives! Let us know what you think of this story in the comments, and share with your family and friends. You can check out similar stories on Happiest.
