In life, it’s always nice to ‘pay it forward’ and do a little good deed for someone else. A kind gesture really does go a long way in life. On a recent flight, Denny Kukich decided to share a random act of kindness with some of his fellow passengers.
Denny had just put his carry-on luggage into the overhead compartment and sat down to begin reading his book for the flight. But just before they were set to take-off, a group of soldiers in uniform boarded the plane.
The soldiers sat in the vacant seats around Denny. So he decided to strike up a conversation with the soldiers. Denny asked them where they were heading.
The soldier told Denny that his crew was heading to Petawawa. There they would be doing some special training for two weeks before getting deployed in Afghanistan.
An hour into their trip, a flight attendant announced that sack lunches were available to passengers for $5 each.
There was still a few hours left of the flight so Denny decided to buy himself a meal to help him get through. But Denny overheard one of the soldiers asking one of his troop pals if he was going to get anything. Though they were probably hungry, they both said no.
That seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks. I’ll wait till we get to base.
After looking around, Denny noticed that none of the soldiers had bought a sack lunch. That’s when Denny decided to give a little ‘random act of kindness’ to the soldiers on board the flight.
Denny felt it was the least he could do for their sacrifice to protect his country’s freedom as they fight overseas. Denny approached a flight attendant and handed her $50. He then asked her to get each of the soldiers some lunch.
She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq; it’s almost like you are doing it for him.’
The flight attendant got 10 meals ready and handed each one to the soldiers. She then went over to Denny and asked if he’d like chicken or beef. At that moment, he was a bit confused but he replied chicken.
Moments later, she returned with a first class dinner plate just for Denny. But the good deeds didn’t stop there. In fact, others on the flight started giving some random acts of kindness back to Denny. As he was heading back from the restroom, a stranger stopped him.
‘I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.’ He handed me $25.
As Denny got back to his seat, he noticed the captain approach him. The captain extended his arm and shook Denny’s hand to thank him for the kind gesture.
I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.
Denny then heard the passengers on the flight applaud him. As he walked down the aisle later on the flight, another stranger shook his and gave him $25.
When the plane landed, another passenger also handed Denny $25 for his kindness.
Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them $75. ‘It will take you some time to reach the base… It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.’
Denny headed to his car and said a small prayer for the soldiers’ safety.
It’s nice to hear that there is some good in the world. Bravo Denny for sharing a little bit of love with some strangers.
