Debbie Murphy was excited to be attending one of Pink’s concerts in Brisbane, Australia. She loved nothing more than singing and dancing to her favorite artist’s pop bangers. But in June 2018, just weeks before the show, Debbie passed away.
Debbie’s 14-year-old daughter Leah was devastated by the loss of her loving mother. The wounds from her mom’s passing were still fresh but she felt it was right to use Debbie’s tickets to go to Pink’s concert in her honor. She knew her mom would have wanted her to go and have a good time.
Leah’s family tried to get in contact with Pink to tell them Debbie’s story and to receive a message of positivity from their idol. But they didn’t hear anything.
Instead, Leah and her family decided to make a sign and bring it to the concert. They didn’t know if Pink would see it but it was worth a shot for sure. The sign read:
My name is Leah — I’m 14 years old. I lost my beautiful Mum last month. I would LOVE a hug… Please!
Fellow concert-goers spotted Leah’s sign and they all banded together to try and get her message to the singer in the packed crowd. The crowd around Leah, who were all strangers, frantically waved the sign in Pink’s direction in the hopes that she would see it.

Then they noticed Pink’s eyes glance in their direction and she began squinting. “OK, what is that?!” she asked the crowd.
The audience then passed the sign forward up towards the stage where Pink began to read it. Once she had read the message aloud, Pink’s face was filled with compassion.
Without saying a word, she began to walk down into the crowd towards Leah. Pink hugged the young girl and comforted her as she sobbed in her arms. She then gave her an autograph and posed for a selfie before telling Leah that she was going to be ok.
We ended up at the front row and Pink just held her for … it felt like 20 seconds. And Leah’s only 14, she’s a teeny-tiny little thing and she just sobbed uncontrollably in her arms. Pink was just so genuine, she said, ‘hey, don’t cry, everything’s going to be okay’. I haven’t seen her smile so much since. Her dad said he woke up feeling happy today, happier than he has been in a long time.
They say ‘never meet your idols’ – but I’m sure Leah would have a very different story to tell you, that’s for sure.
