Mom Enters Baby With Down Syndrome Into Gerber Competition, Dad Bursts Into Tears At Result

By - 8th February 2018

Out of over 140,000 entries across America, 2018’s Gerber Baby has been chosen, and this year’s baby is challenging all stereotypes and giving hope to children with special needs the world over. Meet ‘cute as a button’ Lucas Warren.

1-year-old Lucas from Dalton, Georgia, is the first child with down syndrome to be selected as Gerber’s Spokesbaby, and his parents couldn’t be prouder.

Ever since 2010, Gerber has held a yearly contest to look for the perfect baby to represent the brand. The original Gerber Baby, Ann Turner Cook, had been the face of Gerber since 1927, but now there is a new baby to represent the brand each year.

Judges looked through hundreds of thousands of entries but the baby that stood out for them was baby Lucas, with his infectious big smile.

Lucas’ parents, Jason and Cortney, couldn’t be happier for their baby boy and his father wept with pride when asked what it means for the family. After persuasion from a family member, Cortney had entered Lucas into the competition, wondering if the judges would love his heart-grabbing smile as much as they did.

As father Jason sobbed through his interview, he spoke of what Lucas’ win means for people with special needs. The parents hope that it will open people’s eyes to accepting and loving people like Lucas.

We’re hoping that it will shed a little bit of light on the special needs community and help more individuals with special needs be accepted and not limited. They have the potential to change the world, just like everybody else.

Cortney is concerned that Lucas may suffer at the hand of bullies as he grows older, but she hopes that this privilege of becoming the Gerber baby will help Lucas to thrive as he enters adulthood. The parents hope that as he grows older he will not be ashamed of his disability, but be proud of himself.

Bill Partyka, the CEO of Gerber said that Lucas is the ‘perfect fit’ for the company’s mantra. They believe that every baby is a Gerber baby.

Lucas’ winning smile and joyful expression won our hearts this year, and we are all thrilled to name him our 2018 Spokesbaby.

Adorable Lucas is a beacon of hope for other children with down syndrome and acts as proof that they are capable of everything that other people are. It turns out Lucas’ dazzling smile has won over everyone, not just his family. ?
