By - 27th April 2018

In the evening of the 23rd of April, 6-year-old Kaydon Leach disappeared in Blount County, Tennessee along with his little dog Chula. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an Endangered Child Alert for missing boy Kaydon after the authorities began to search for him at around 7 pm.

100 first responders had started the search. Teams conducted grid searches through a 2000-acre area in the rain overnight and well into Tuesday.

Thankfully, after a 22-hour search, Chula and Kaydon were found half a mile away from his home in the Top of the World Community in Blount County at around 3:30 pm on April 24th.

Missing boy Kaydon and his dog Chula had been missing for 22 hours

This huge operation included the Tennesee Bureau of Investigation, FBI, K-9 teams, Blount County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, a Black Hawk military helicopter and countless volunteer search parties.

But there’s one hero who actually managed to keep Kaydon safe, that was little Chula the black and white terrier. The dog was guarding his master, keeping him safe until rescue arrived.

“The dog actually growled at the rescuers when they approached Kaydon,”

Bount County fireman Aaron Woods was one of the searchers who found the little boy and his dog.

“I keep saying he popped up. To me, he did, because I had just looked over there. What I got to him, the dog was kinda giving me a little growl like ‘who are you?’”

Kaydon was frightfully cold, the rescuers wrapped him in warm jackets and gave him a piggyback up the mountain to the road where he was then taken to Blount Memorial Hospital.

“I was grinning from ear to ear. Even afterwards, after we got down to our debriefing and all the way home, I’ve seen a lot of bad stuff in my life, in my career, and this is the good stuff. This is the good stuff.”

Kaydon’s family released a statement through a hospital spokesperson expressing their appreciation and gratitude to everyone who helped them find their son.

“We’re so thankful to everyone, from local law enforcement agencies to volunteers, who helped us find Kaydon. The amount of support we have received has been tremendous, even from people we don’t even know. We appreciate all our friends and neighbors, and ask for privacy at this time.”
