It takes a lot to break Simon Cowell, the notoriously critical talent show judge. His comments over the years have been so harsh that he was once dubbed ‘Mr. Nasty’. But when Michael Ketterer sang in the Quarterfinals of this year’s America’s Got Talent, the stony-faced judge broke down in tears.
Earlier in the season, Michael Ketterer received Simon’s Golden Buzzer after his heartwrenching performance. Michael wowed the judges with his raw, powerful vocals and the passion and emotion that he portrayed on stage. This is a man with some serious talent!
But aside from his undoubted talent, Michael also had a heart of gold. Michael is a pediatric mental health nurse from East Tennesse. He currently lives in Orange County, CA, with his wife and their six adopted children.
Many of his children have disabilities and special needs, so they are a testament to what good people he and his wife are. Not everybody would be willing to take on the hardships and struggles that come with supporting a child with extra needs. Winning America’s Got Talent would mean a lot to Michael, as it would give his family much-needed financial help.
When asked in his initial audition why he was there, Michael had the perfect answer for the judges.
My family’s my reason why I’m here. My wife and my six children. You know, one of the things that happens, especially because my children came out of foster care… when you’re surviving you can’t dream. And that has been one of the most rewarding things, is providing them with a home and a safe environment where they’re free to dream. I’m here because I want to show them that if their dad can live out his dreams, then nothing’s impossible for them.
Simon was so taken by Michael’s incredible performance that he pressed the coveted Golden Buzzer, sending him straight to the semi-finals. Now we get to see Michael sing again and his performance is just as beautiful as his original audition.
Michael finished his song to a full-audience standing ovation and even moved the judging panel to tears. When Simon is asked to give his opinion on the performance, Simon can barely even get any words out. I think it’s safe to say that Michael Ketterer has something extremely special about him
While Michael’s performances move you to tears with his passion, they are happy tears. This is a good man with a dream, who just wants to set an example for his children. We hope that Michael will go far in this competition. Watch his performance in the video below and maybe have a tissue to hand…
