If you have a loved one enlisted in the army you miss them all year round, but when the holiday season comes around it can be even more difficult. We assume that children won’t notice their missing family member, but we forget that children feel emotions stronger than we think.
3-year-old Kensley Penney’s father, Sergeant Scott Penney, had been deployed in Afghanistan for 9 months and she missed him terribly. He had left when she was only 2-years-old and the family did all they could to keep him as a part of her life as best they could.
There’s pictures all over our house, and like I said, she has her Daddy doll. And when she can, he gets on the webcam, and she can see him, and wave at him, and make funny faces to him. So, she knows who Daddy is.
But Kensley had decided that she had been without him long enough, so she decided to pull a favour in with the Big Man himself. Sitting on Santa’s knee at the mall, clutching her teddy bear with her father’s face stuck on, she leaned into him and told him what she wanted for Christmas; for her daddy to come home.
But Santa already knew Kensley’s Christmas wish and had made arrangements with the Pentagon to deliver her gift early.
Her little face when she looks up to see her daddy walking towards her is enough to melt your heart on the spot. It is impossible to watch without choking up!
Embracing her daddy tightly, she cries “Hi daddy, hi daddy. I missed you! I love you!” Onlookers awe in happiness and I doubt there was a dry eye in the room.
