Birthdays are something we all celebrate. It’s a day where you get to reflect on your life and get presents just for being older. So of course, you’ve all heard the ‘Happy Birthday’ song over the years. But for some people, they don’t get the chance to hear it.
But for one custodian, that was about to change when some kindergarten students surprised him by learning how to do Happy Birthday in sign language.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Happy Birthday song is one of the most popular tunes in the English language. Of course it is, everybody hears it once a year. According to USA Today, Happy Birthday has been sung in at least 143 movies.
Even children from a very young age know how to sing the song from memory. And one school were about to do something extra special for a deaf custodian.
A class of kindergarten students sang Happy Birthday in sign language for their deaf custodian
The kids from Hickerson Elementary School in Tullahoma, Tennessee, worked with their teacher to learn how to sing Happy Birthday in sign language. They did this as a nice surprise for their kind custodian, Mr. James.
It was going to be his 60th birthday so the school wanted to say a special happy birthday for him. That’s when Principal Jimmy Anderson got the idea to surprise Mr. James.
Mr. James teaches the kids’ sign language every now and then. He teaches them good manners and how to treat other people.
Mr. James has worked with the school district for 3 decades. 15 of those years have been spent at Hickerson Elementary. As you can see in the video, Mr. James was moved to tears when he saw what the kids had in store for him.
