Homelessness is a huge problem across the globe. Not only is it heartbreaking to see someone on the streets, knowing that there are enough empty houses privately owned but unused seems like such a waste. Worst of all is seeing veterans abandoned by their service. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, there are nearly 40,000 homeless veterans in America alone. More needs to be done to help those who have served our countries when they leave. Mental health issues like PTSD are common, and many veterans struggle to reintegrate with society.
But, the Veterans Community Project in Kansas City, Missouri, helped their city’s homeless veterans. They saw the homelessness that faced so many veterans in their city and did something to help.
They built 13 small homes to house homeless veterans. It may not look like much, but it’s certainly better than sleeping on the streets. There are four family homes in the unit and nine single person abodes. Each house comes fully equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and bed.
But, what may be even more important is the help and support the Veterans Community Project offers. They offer classes on how to manage finances, cook, stay healthy, and overcome substance abuse. These are vital skills that years in the forces can make you forget. While their lives are on the line, members of the forces don’t cook, they have very few costs, and coming back to society can be a shock.
The project is hoping to move forward into phase two, adding 19 more homes and a community center. While some people question how this project will help soldiers’ mental health problems, the answer is simple. If you aren’t worrying about where you’re sleeping tonight, you can focus on other things. Most doctors and even phone providers require a permanent address to sign up. These houses will help no end.
“One of the vets was sitting out there last week, watching the houses get built and was in tears,” said Mark Solomon. “Literally just crying about the fact that he was going to be moving into one of these houses. That’s real. That’s what makes this all worth it and yeah, it’s a ton of time and a ton of effort, but we’re gonna be able to help these people.”
