We all understand that the planet needs help. Serious help. Global warming is happening at an alarming rate, and animals are dying out. English naturalist David Attenborough even says that species are dying out at the same rate as the dinosaurs. However, one man is trying to change that. Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss has pledged to donate $1 billion over the next 10 years in order to help conservation efforts.
Hansjörg Wyss, billionaire and philanthropist and CEO of the Wyss Foundation, is just trying to do his bit. His foundation hopes to support conservation work across the world. He also wants to protect the land and the oceans, and raise awareness of environmental issues.
Today, we’re excited to announce the launch a $1 billion campaign to help protect 30% of the planet by 2030. Learn more at https://t.co/XK6iRrXOX1 pic.twitter.com/9wBvXVzCy7

Wyss wrote an article for the New York Times explaining our individual duty to doing our bit. Not all of us need to (or can) donate a billion dollars, but those who can, should.
“Every one of us – citizens, philanthropists, business and government leaders – should be troubled by the enormous gap between how little of our natural world is currently protected and how much should be protected. It is a gap that we must urgently narrow before our human footprint consumes the earth’s remaining wild places.”
Wyss’ plans will do this by funding a number of scientific projects. The funding will focus on “creating and expanding protected areas, encouraging the international community to establish more ambitious protected area targets, investing in science, and inspiring conservation action and new investments around the world.”
His Work So Far
Since the turn of the millennium, the Wyss Foundation has donated more than $450 million to protect wildlife habitats, and the Swiss billionaire’s intentions are to further this investment. Their efforts have ensured nearly 40 million acres of land and water are already protected. However, you can do your bit to help just by recycling or refusing a plastic straw! Every little helps. You’ve got to start somewhere, so why not now?
If only more billionaires could help people and the planet with their riches. Looking at you, Zuckerberg and Bezos… Let us know what you think of Wyss’ selfless care for the planet in the comments, or tell us what you’re doing to help!
