Single mom achieves her dream of becoming a certified nurse

Faye Lewis, 27, is a single mom who has finally achieved her dream of becoming a registered nurse. But her way has been lined with pitfalls, and she’s come through so much just to get here. Her photo of all her previous work badges went viral but only told half the story.

Her early life went pretty well. She had nearly 12 scholarships and did well in class. However, after a year of studying to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, she got two Bs that kept her from nursing school. To make matters more difficult, she was also pregnant.

“I probably wouldn’t have chosen this journey. But, it’s my journey, I own it. I embrace it,” she told Nurse.org. “My family really supported me and helped me make it possible. When I had him, it gave me even more strength to pursue my dreams so he can do the same.”

A supportive family is really important and helped Lewis in her decision to take a job at KFC. She rose through the ranks, as well as taking her CNA training. She got her LPN shortly after.

For a while, the single mom was working two jobs, as an LPN and at KFC, and decided to try to achieve her Associate’s in Nursing. Continuing her education was important to her.

However, a week in, her family was devastated. Her father, three cousins and her dog had died in a house fire. Her mother had just managed to survive in what Lewis calls “a miracle of God.”

“My faith and relationship with God helped me get through that dark time,” she admitted. “I prayed a lot and asked God to guide me. I had a supportive family and I knew my Dad wouldn’t want me to quit.”

She worked hard and earned her Associate’s in Nursing, as well as her BA. However, she was struggling and wasn’t sure if she could make it through her Doctorate program. She thought of her mom’s advice to keep going, and looked back at where she’d come from.

That’s when she got the idea to take a photo of her job badges. Every job told her story and showed how far she’s come. She posted it as a motivation to herself, but it soon went viral.

“I had been through a lot, and I knew I could do this too… I just wanted to have this photo to motivate me through my Doctorate program.”
