Getting lost at sea would be a nightmare for anybody. But imagine that you’re not trapped in a boat. You’re actually fighting for your life in the water, just you and your son! Saving lives at sea is a dangerous game, especially when children are involved.
On a cold day in February, half a mile from Ynys Dulas, lifeguards got a call saying that two kayaks had gone missing at sea. The rescuers knew they had to act fast as the ocean temperatures would be freezing. Immediately, this rapidly lowers the chance of survival.
A father and his 13-year-old son, Joe, had become caught in some harsh ocean waves. The waters had pushed them far from land. The father recounts saying to his son, “If you straddle the boat, I’ll try and kick it towards the island”.
Knowing they were out to try and rescue a father and son left the lifeguards feeling a sense of urgency and horror.
We got the information that it was a father and his 13-year-old son. And that was a real kind of game changer for me. Big lump in my throat. I felt instantly emotional.
Joe’s father was petrified when he heard Joe say to him some words he never wanted to hear. Joe said, “I think we are gonna die.” and at that moment, Joe’s dad was convinced they both would too.
If we die, the last thing I want to do is give you a kiss.
Joe’s father gave him a kiss and told Joe he loved him and the two set off to try and swim back to land. But Joe’s father didn’t think he was going to make it. He thought he would die before his son.
My arms were starting to fail and I remember feeling that this is really warm and really peaceful and I just went to sleep.
Time was running out. Saving lives at sea would now be critical as Joe’s father was on the cusp of death.
The lifeguards were now told that two people had been spotted on the rocks of Dulas island. Somehow the father and son had made it to the island. When Joe’s dad asked his son how he managed to get there, Joe told him that he dragged him onto his back and carried him.
At just 13-years-old, Joe managed to pull his father along to the shore and when he managed to hoist the unconscious body onto the rocks, he immediately gave his father CPR. Joe is a true hero who saved his father’s life that day.
