When you’re a teenager you never think of your teachers as being cool and interesting, it’s only when you grow up that you realise they are people the same as you and me. So students at the Lake Mary High School got the shock of their lives when their principal proved she was cooler than they’d first thought.
As the school step team took position in the middle of the gym floor at the last pep rally of the football season, the students enthusiastically welcomed them. But they had no idea that an additional dancer would be joining them on this particular occasion.
As the new school principal, Dr Donna ‘Mickey’ Reynolds, ran up to the team and joined the formation, the crowd of pupils went wild. As the principal danced the complicated routine with the high school team, students and parents couldn’t believe their eyes – she absolutely nailed it!
I didn’t know how the students would react. My expectation was that they would be dying laughing, that they would think it was hysterical. But I have never heard such cheering. I was so blown away by how much they were cheering.
A parent of one of the students filmed the routine and posted it to YouTube, resulting in over 2.4 million people going crazy for the principal’s incredible performance.
‘Stepping’ is a form of percussive dance and the 49-year-old principal was once a captain of the Lake Mary High School dance team in her youth. She also was a captain to two step teams at other high schools, so she is no stranger to performing elaborate routines at sports games.
As the new principal that year, she wanted to connect with the students and support the school teams, to show that she’s not a boring principal. I think it’s safe to say that she won over the students!
