For parents of children with disabilities, it’s hard not to worry about how other people will treat them. Pat and Sandra Long know how hard it is for their autistic son to do some basic tasks that other people wouldn’t think twice about.
Pat wanted his son to gain some independence so he worked with him to try and help develop his social skills. Owen Long practiced over and over in the car with Pat about what to say when he went into a local restaurant. Owen’s father wanted him to go into the Sun Cuisines restaurant in New York to ask for a takeout menu.
Owen’s autism makes it hard for him to make eye contact and hold a conversation. Because of his autism, Owen likes routine, especially with his food. So being able to study the menu in-depth would help ease his mind and allow him to make a better decision.
After practicing his social cues with his dad in the car, Owen headed into the restaurant to ask for a menu while his dad waited in the parking lot.

Pat instructed Owen to find a member of staff to ask for a menu then bring it back to the car where they would pick something together for him to order for dinner.
Owen headed inside the restaurant but he didn’t return right away. As the minutes passed, Pat grew worried so he headed inside to try and find his son.
As it happens, Owen had asked the restaurant’s co-owner Aye Thein for a menu, but she did way more for him than most would. In fact, Aye’s actions brought his mother to tears with her kindness.
