When Wayne Winter’s beloved wife was diagnosed with stage 5 kidney failure, they knew that it could be years before a suitable donor was found. So Wayne took matters into his own hands and set out on a mission to find a donor for his wife in the most unconventional of ways.
Writing on a sandwich board and attaching it to straps that he hung over his shoulders, Wayne travelled far and wide to make his plea to passers by as he walked up and down the roads of Farr West, Utah. His board, which read “Need Kidney 4 Wife” was seen by hundreds of drivers every day and Wayne hoped that one day soon somebody would come forward and answer his prayers.
Miraculously, Wayne’s appeal seemed to be working as his phone filled up with messages from potential donors. But recently Wayne and Deanna received the call they were waiting for; somebody had come forward with a kidney that matched the requirements for Deanna. They finally have hope in sight!
We have a kidney for you, get down here. I was just so overwhelmed. I didn’t know what to think. Between 7-800, it filled my phone up. I’m sitting here with this full phone. If she can have a good five years that would be awesome, we can have our life back.
But now that Wayne has had a taste of the good that he was able to do for his wife with such a simple idea, he wants to extend his help to as many people as possible.
I will spend more of my days walking with my sign to see how many I can get. Think about it, we could start a kidney revolution and that would be so great.
Wayne decided to not wait for fate to play its hand and took control of the situation himself, and look at the great outcome it had! Wayne is an inspiration and I’m sure his wife Deanna is eternally grateful to him and the kind stranger who donated their kidney to her.
