We all hope to raise kind and well-mannered children. We hope that they take after us, and learn from their (and our) mistakes to become better people. Sometimes, your kid will surprise you with their maturity and clarity of thought, and others they will be their silly, goofy self. Of course, it’s best to have a balance of fun and seriousness, but this kid, in particular, has selflessness to spare.

Christian McPhilamy is just a normal kid. He likes sports, goes to school, all the usual stuff. But, in 2012 when Christian was aged just six years old, everything changed. He saw a commercial on TV for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The commercial showed kids his age with cancer, many of whom underwent chemotherapy and lost their hair. But, Christian knew he could make a difference.

His mom, Deeanna Thomas, describes her son as compassionate, kind, and strong-willed, and he proved her right with his immense charity effort. Christian decided to grow his hair until it was long enough to donate to a charity that provides wigs to child cancer patients.

For the next two and a half years, he grew his hair longer and longer. However, it attracted some attention at school. While teachers were supportive of his cause, some school bullies started calling him a girl. Teachers who didn’t know him sometimes mistook him for one. But, he didn’t let it deter him.

Three years later, Christian’s hair met the required 12 inches for wig-making. He was incredibly proud to cut off his ponytails and donate them to children in need. Now, he rocks a very short cut, probably to avoid mistaken identity.

“I am so very proud of my son,” his mom Deeanna posted to Facebook. “He has done a beautiful thing. He amazes me every day with the little to the big.”

We’re proud of Christian’s efforts too! Let us know what you think in the comments, and share with your family and friends.
