Having children is a big part of a lot of people’s lives, but for some, it can seem like a losing battle. For Jaylyn Hosburg, the questions from her mother of ‘when she’d be getting grandkids’ became more and more hard to answer.
Jaylyn Hosburgh has struggled with fertility issues. Procedures and treatments cost her thousands of dollars and her insurance won’t cover those costs.
Jaylyn Hosburgh and her husband have spent over $10,000 on IVF treatments over the years to try and have kids but none have worked.
After every negative pregnancy test, I fell deeper into depression. Every pregnancy announcement hurt. I was jealous. Jealous that it wasn’t us; jealous that they ‘didn’t even have to try.’ Jealous that they planned it perfectly to be off for the summer. I just wanted a baby and didn’t care how it happened. Jealousy is an evil emotion.
The Hosburgh’s took some time off and they started trying for kids again. Jaylyn went through numerous procedures to harvest her eggs. But the procedure failed again.
Jaylyn started looking into adoption plans as she thought they’d never be able to have kids of their own
We had a home study done. They come to your house and make sure your house is good and talk to you about why you were looking to adopt. We told our story. During this meeting, we were told we had to be done with the fertility treatments and I couldn’t commit to that, so adoption went on the back burner.
They went back to the ideas of IVF but this time they wanted to try a different method. However, it was going to cost them around $20,000 so Jaylyn Hosburgh and her husband had to decline. “We didn’t have that money,” Jaylyn recalls.
Knowing her daughter was feeling depressed, Jaylyn’s mother called to see if she wanted to go to bingo with her
She must have heard how sad I was as she called back and said, ‘OK, 1 session.’
The pair turned up to a very busy bingo hall. Seeing all those people made Jaylyn very anxious and she tried to turn round to leave. Thankfully, she didn’t.
“This day changed the course of our lives forever.”
The accumulator was at $24,000. I called my mom to say, ‘forget it, it’s so busy,’ but she was already gone. Once she got there I tried to convince her to leave but she wouldn’t. We buy our books and I buy 3 cards instead of my usual 2. My mom notices and does the same. This day changed the course of our lives forever. My mom won the $24,000.
5 days later, Jaylyn had the treatment and eagerly awaited without getting her hopes up too much. “To our surprise, we saw our first positive pregnancy test EVER,” Jaylyn wrote on Facebook.
We cried and then my husband asked if I had any pee left and made me pee on the one that says pregnant or not pregnant. He didn’t believe the lines. Sure enough, I was pregnant. Little did we know our lives were about to change forever. Our bingo babies were conceived.
Yes, you heard that right, babies – the couple were going to be having twins! “Then the doctor says, ‘There is one baby and here is the heartbeat, and here is another baby and here is the heartbeat.’ At first, I thought he was kidding,”
But it wasn’t smooth sailing, her pregnancy involved frequent hospital trips and spotted bleeding.
During labor, things got worse for Jaylyn Hosburgh
I had a postpartum haemorrhage after each baby was born and they could not get it under control. My blood pressure was 60/30 and my heart rate was at 200 BPM. At one point I remember asking my mom if I was dying.
Thankfully, a high-risk doctor happened to be on duty that day and he saved her life. Five days later, Jaylyn took home her new babies.
She welcomed Maxwell Richard Joseph Hosburgh and Christine Beverly Hosburgh into the world. Her little Bingo Babies.
Had it not have been for Jaylyn’s mom and her lucky bingo card, she may never have had Harper and Maxwell.
The twins are both happy and healthy and they’re mommy and daddy’s special little miracles. All thanks to grandma and her winning bingo card!
