Preparing yourself for a job interview can be a very daunting experience. Not only can it be tricky to pinpoint the atmosphere, that job interview could be the necessity to change your life. A homeless man’s job interview is quite literally life-changing.
Phil from Tallahassee, Florida was getting himself prepared for a job interview he had at his local McDonald’s branch. Phil was homeless, but he was told he’d get the job if he turned up clean-shaven and presentable.
This sounds simple, but for somebody who is already struggling with money and has no form of home security, this is a huge challenge.
Phil had managed to buy a second-hand razor but he experienced difficulties when it turned out it was broken. It was a Sunday and the shops were shut and his interview was the following day. The cards were not in Phil’s favour.
As Phil was stood outside a gas station struggling, one of the City of Tallahassee Police Department officer’s pulled over.
Officer Tony Carlson spotted the man looking quite distressed and approached him to ask if he was ok.
“I saw [a man], who turned out to be Phil, out front trying to shave, having some trouble with his razor. As I got out of my car, he asked me if I knew anything about fixing a razor, because it was broken, and if I could look at it. For whatever reason, instead of just getting in my car and leaving, I went over there and I looked at it, and it was missing a screw.”
Neither Phil or Tony had any spare screws on them, but Tony was able to help tighten the existing screws so the razor was usable.
The homeless man’s job interview was the only thing on his mind – he had to look presentable
As Tony worked on fixing the razor, he got talking to Phil and learned about his interview. “He seemed excited about it”. Tony was so impressed by Phil’s determination that he wanted to give him a helping hand.
As Phil started shaving, Tony realized there were still obstacles to overcome. Phil didn’t have a mirror so he was unable to see his own face. That’s when Tony stepped in and shaved Phil’s face for him as they stood in the gas station parking lot.
I wish I could’ve done more, but in between calls for services, this was the best I could do.
A passerby saw the event unfold and immediately began filming as he was so impressed with the officer’s kindness. But Tony remains modest about his actions.
It happens all the time, It just so happens this time somebody caught it on film. Officers all over the place… our department, the Sheriff’s department, other cities… they’re always doing things like this that don’t get the attention that this just happened to get.
You’ll be pleased to know that Phil got the job at McDonald’s thanks to a helping hand from Officer Tony. Isn’t this such a heartwarming story? All it takes is a little bit of love and a kind gesture to change someone’s life.
