Everybody’s situations are different, and many people have difficult periods in their lives. One Nashville man is desperate to turn his situation around, so has learned a skill. Not everyone is as fortunate to have these opportunities, but he is making the most of them. Ean Greer has learned how to make leather shoes and backpacks. Now he sells them to buy himself food, despite being homeless.

“Everything that I make is something that people wore like thousands of years ago,” he said. “It’s crazy what you can do just with your hands if you just sit down and start doing it.”

But, how did he come to start making shoes? It’s not the first thing you think of as a way to make money.

“I started doing this for me, for my own shoes. Because I wanted moccasins. I used to hitchhike around everywhere, always having no money, no money for socks. It’s the most embarrassing thing if you get invited over to someone’s house and you gotta take your shoes off, and it kills the whole mood. So I was like, I gotta have some real leather shoes.”

So he made them. He works from a studio space run by a Nashville non-profit called Poverty and the Arts. But how does he get all his materials? He’s just a lucky guy.

“I was walking through the parking lot and there was this weird hippy girl in a van. She gave me a garbage bag full of leather. And I always find it magically like that. I found leather at the bus stop one time.”

However, despite the backpacks and shoes, he is still homeless.

“I’m not exactly able to pay rent now, doing this. Besides the fact that I don’t live in a house, I’m basically normal.”
