No matter what people say, every President of the United States has had their secrets over the year. And no, they’re not all bad. In fact, George H.W. Bush had one of the most heartwarming secrets that he kept hidden for over a decade.
Almost one month after his passing, it was revealed that the 41st President of the United States had been secretly sponsoring a young boy called Timothy for 10 years!
According to a CNN report, the 41st’s friendship with Timothy began after George attended a Christmas concert in Washington. A musician was performing and they asked the audience if they would like to sponsor a child.
All of the sudden, Mr. Bush, who was sitting only a few rows back and surrounded by security, raised his hand and asked for a pamphlet.
Bush’s security team were worried about the pamphlet’s authenticity as the letter had not been screened. However, President Bush insisted he wanted to be involved with the program. And that’s how it all began.
George H.W. Bush’s pen pal alias was George Walker and he began writing to Timothy in January 2002.
Dear Timothy, I want to be your new pen pal. I am an old man, 77 years old, but I love kids; and though we have not met I love you already. I live in Texas – I will write you from time to time – Good Luck. G. Walker
However, Wess Stafford, the former president of Compassion International explained that the covert operation wasn’t always the easiest of tasks. Because of concerns for Timothy’s safety, Wess was put in charge of screening each letter. But George H.W. Bush’s pen pal exchanges were made more difficult because George began providing more information than he was supposed to.
In one letter, George attached a photo of his dog, Sadie, who he claimed had “met a lot of famous people.” In another letter, he mentioned that he had been invited to the White House for Christmas:
Dear Timothy, I love that picture of you holding that ‘World Time’ gadget. I also have learned that you play the guitar – terrific! Timothy, have you ever heard of the White House? That’s where the president of the USA lives. I got to go to the White House at Christmas time. Here is a little booklet that I got at the White House in Washington.
Even though sending gifts was banned, George H.W. Bush’s pen pal would still receive them from him. George began sending more gifts after he discovered Timothy loved art.
His letters were the sweetest, spirited letters I have read from any sponsor, but he kept giving hints as to who he could be. He was really pushing the envelope.
Thankfully, in their time writing to one another, Timothy never figured out who ‘George Walker’ was. In one of their letters, Timothy thanked the Walker couple for not forgetting him:
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Walker, How are you? I hope you’re in good condition. I would like to thank you for not forgetting me. You’re so nice and good. God is so good to us. He gives us the body & will to get to where we want to go. Thank you so much for the book, I like it very much.
When the teenage boy graduated from the program, he was told who his sponsor really was. Timothy was stunned by the life-changing revelation. Wess Stafford knows that sponsoring a child can do great deals of good for someone.
Sponsoring a child, even if they are still in the womb, can encourage them and guide them to become great human beings.
