There’s nothing that inspires us more than finding helpful heroes around the world. Putting somebody else before yourself is a truly inspiring and noble thing to do. But for a group of emergency service workers, it’s just another day at the office. But they often go above the line of duty to help out their community where possible. As proven by these firefighters gardening for a man they’ve just helped save.
One day, Gene Work from Bayonet Point, Florida was outside working hard with his brother, Mark Rouco. They were laying down new sod in his yard.
Gene’s homeowner’s association was threatening a hefty fine if he didn’t replace the sod by a certain date. He was working as quickly as he could to lay down the expensive sod on the ground before it died.
While Gene was working, he began to feel a sharp pain in his chest which soon spread down his arm
What Gene didn’t know was that his entire coronary artery was blocked – Gene was having a huge heart attack. Thankfully, his wife Melissa Ann Work recognised the symptoms and called 911 immediately.
Firefighters and EMS workers rushed to Gene’s house. Throughout this whole affair, Gene repeatedly asked Melissa Ann what was going to happen to the new sod. Even throughout all the pain, he was still so concerned with paying a huge fine if he didn’t get the sod laid down in time.
While he was having his heart attack, literally in and out of consciousness, he kept begging me to figure out the sod and have it put down because he didn’t want it to go to waste and die. It’s ALL he kept asking about literally during a massive heart attack… I calmed him and kept saying ‘Jesus will help us. It’s ok. Jesus will figure this out babe.’
Paramedics got Gene to the hospital safely where he had surgery to install a stent.
The doctors told Melissa Ann that had she waited just a few more minutes to call for help, Gene wouldn’t have made it
While Melissa Ann was at the hospital with her husband, her brother-in-law Mark had stayed behind to watch the kids and to help continue working on the sod.
But then something unexpected and incredible happened – the firefighters and EMTs returned to help with the lawn. How incredible is that?!
They didn’t have to, it’s not their job, but they clearly saw how stressed Gene was getting about this work so they all pitched in to get it done for when he recovers from surgery.
Firefighters gardening all to help out a man who was incredibly stressed
Firefighters poured from the truck with their work gloves on and began to install the new sod while Mark watched on in amazement.
Before he knows it, 7 firefighters and EMT’s jumped out, put on gloves and said they came back because they knew Gene was in serious trouble and they wanted to lay the new sod so it didn’t die. They knew he wouldn’t be able to do any work for weeks so they came back.
Melissa Ann was overwhelmed with emotion when she found out what had happened. She couldn’t believe all these emergency service workers stepped in to help out. If that isn’t going the extra mile, I don’t know what is.
