Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best footballers in the world. He has won every trophy possible with Real Madrid, the most decorated football team in the world. Now playing for Italian side Juventus, he is at the peak of his game. He has won a record-tying 5 Ballon d’Or awards, the most of any European player ever. But this week, it’s his off-pitch actions that have made the headlines.
Captain of the Portuguese national side, Ronaldo has won 29 trophies in his career and scored over 700 goals. But, he also makes news off the pitch. The good side is training regimes and helping fans. The bad side is rape allegations and tax evasion. Luckily, this time he is in the news for a good reason.
One day, he was on the team coach with the rest of the Portugal team. They were leaving the Bessa stadium and heading to their next game. But Cristiano Ronaldo saw a boy standing outside with a sign in Portuguese. It read:
“Cristiano, give me a hug.”
The former footballer of the year made the bus stop so he could go and give the child a hug. But, it meant more than he could have ever imagined. Eduardo Moireira has been battling leukaemia since he was one year old, and now at 11, he stands barely four feet tall. His life is filled with illness, but watching his favourite footballer helps him through each day.
Luckily for Eduardo, Cristiano stopped the whole bus for him, they took some selfies and he got the hug he was after. Stopping the bus took no effort from Ronaldo, but it is something this fan will remember for the rest of his life.
