By - 5th June 2019

This holiday nearly turned into a disaster. When three-year-old Kali Dallis started drowning after coming out of her pool float, people feared the worst. But, her sister, aged 10, reacted quickly and saved Kali’s life.

The Dallis family were on holiday at The Savoy apartments in Chamblee, Georgia when disaster struck. She jumped into the shallow end of the pool, but her float went sideways as she hit the water. Kali was submerged upside-down and struggling to get to the surface. Eventually, she managed to get free of the float, but couldn’t tread water. Luckily, that’s when her sister noticed the problem.

10-year-old Jayla Dallis had been getting out of the pool on the other side while this was happening. She turned around and saw Kali underwater, and immediately lept into action. The older girl jumped in and pulled her sister to the surface, and onto the side of the pool.

She was, like, heavy, so I had to pull her by her hair, then I grabbed her by her waist and pulled her up,” she said.

Bystanders called 911, and the pool manager started to perform CPR. The first emergency service to arrive was Police Sgt. Ed Lyons, who took over the CPR due to his training.

“I saw my little girl lying there, same little bathing suit she wears, same kind of hair pulled up in a bun up top,” Lyons said. “You know, you’ve got to kind of push past that and do what you’re trained to do.”

Thankfully, he felt a pulse and Kali was in a better position than before. But, emergency services took her to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. She remained there in a critical condition for two weeks. Although doctors weren’t sure if the ventilator would be enough to help her pull through, she made a full recovery.
