Bus drivers have a tough job as it is. They spend their days driving the same routes, negotiating traffic, and dealing with customers. But this bus driver went out of his way to help a passenger, showing that a little kindness can go a long way.
Gene Hubbard makes the same trip every day. He has done for the past 20 years. At 69 years old, he hasn’t lost his independence, and he still goes to work every single day.
This story becomes so much more incredible when you learn that Gene is blind. Unfortunately, diabetes took his eyesight from him years ago. However, it hasn’t stopped him from working, or from taking the difficult commute.
Gene relies a lot on memory to make his journey to and from the bus stop. Of course, he uses his stick to work out exactly where to go, but he knows how many steps to take in each direction to get there. However, something recently threw a spanner in the works.
A road on the bus route where Gene usually gets on and off the bus has been the subject of maintenance. The roadworks have put Gene’s usual route out of sync. He struggled to know where and when to cross the road due to all the equipment and noise.
“If I don’t have a regular locating point to start from, I may as well be in the middle of the ocean,” Gene explained.
Luckily, his bus driver was on hand to help him out. A bystander captured the footage of the bus driver stopping traffic and going out of his way to help Gene cross the road. Gene’s distress must have been palpable, but this driver’s good deed saved his day.
