Sometimes we don’t realise just how lucky we are. If you have a roof over your head, food on the table and a bed of your own, then you’re in a much better position than millions of other people.
For Daeyrs and his mother, Dionna, they have been homeless for most of his life. When Dionna lost her job as a trainee nurse they lost their home and wound up hopping around homeless shelters.
Whilst living in state housing, they only had a blow up mattress and a couple of chairs as furniture and Daeyrs slept under a blanket on the floor. It’s safe to say that Daeyrs didn’t have a privileged life.
But luckily for 8-year-old Daeyrs and his mother, they had a guardian angel nearby. A social worker who was working on their case wanted to do something to help the little family.
Reaching out to ‘Humble Design’, a charity organisation, she managed to get them the home of their dreams. The charity fully furnished a property for them, including a fully furnished bedroom for Daeyrs.
He would no longer have to sleep on the floor, but now he would have his own comfy bed to sleep in. Not to mention he would have toys to play with and an art set to create with. It was a dream come true for young Daeyrs.
They managed to film the moment where Daeyrs walked into his new room for the first time and the video is nothing short of tearjerking. For a little boy who had nothing, it is clearly overwhelming for him to suddenly have everything he has always longed for.
He was so excited to have his own room, but also so overwhelmed by what having this really means for him after all he’s been through – to have a place to stay and just be a normal kid with no worries.
Daeyrs’ reaction serves to remind us of how lucky we really are.
