Many of us have mugs that proudly proclaim we are “The World’s Best Dad”, or something to that effect. We may even have a medal somewhere, gifted to us by a proud child on Father’s Day. However, David Hyche may be the real deal.

Hyche’s daughter Rachel lost her sight at four months old. He thought that she would lose her independence and never have what most people believe to be a “normal” life. But she went on to prove him wrong. By the time she was 18 months old, she was telling him that she would do things herself.

As such, she got frustrated at a church Easter egg hunt. She didn’t want people to guide her towards an egg, or to put her hand on it and say she’d “found” it. She was already an independent young woman, and her dad knew she would want something better.

He soon found a man who was making beeping eggs who kindly shared his methods. But Hyche, ever the perfectionist, decided to tweak the ideas. Batteries, switches and beepers came naturally to him as he works with explosives as an ATF agent.

When he had developed the eggs, he showed the results at a convention for bomb technicians, and the association loved the idea. They implemented what is now called the Rachel Project, and every year bomb technicians from the military and law enforcement build beeping eggs for children with visual impairments.

They donate the eggs to schools for visually impaired children. This way, these kids can have an Easter egg hunt too. Other churches have also taken on the initiative to make their hunts accessible for all.

Rachel loves her tailor-made egg hunts, but what do you think? Leave a comment below, or share with your friends and family if you liked this inspiring story of a family fighting adversity and coming together to create something special. You can always read other similar stories on Happiest, too.
