Bears Take First Steps Of Freedom After Being Caged For 20 Years

Is there anything more sad than caged animals? Especially animals abandoned in cages that are far too small for them? Most zoos have large enclosures and rehabilitation or breeding programs to help the animals. However, that was not the case for these four bears.

The zoo they had been a part of was long defunct, and the bears had been abandoned at the side of the road. They were neglected and looking worse for wear until their rescuers came to help.

The bears were affectionately named Bruno, Fifi, Marsha and Pocahontas. Their rusty cages had nowhere to sleep, no shade to hide from the sun, nothing. They hadn’t hibernated for years.

Before the zoo closed for good, the poor bears were forced to perform circus tricks. They stood on their hind legs and even rode bicycles, and were likely trained through the pain.

They were found pacing their cages, one suffering from severe and painful arthritis. It was clear from her walk that she was uncomfortable. They were all trying to cope with their physical and mental deprivation.

Rescuing The Bears

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) rescued them from the confines and moved them to nicer, newer, more spacious cages for rehabilitation. Then, they would be released to the wild. It is already clear that their new cages are much more comfortable than their old ones, so we bet they couldn’t wait to get into the wild. But, just wait for their reactions. We never realised bears could smile.
