It’s with great sadness that I’m writing today about the passing of the ‘Queen of Soul’ herself, Aretha Franklin. Aretha passed away yesterday on the 16th of August at the age of 76.
Aretha Franklin was known as the ‘queen of soul’ with a career spanning decades. And her music, her passion and her incredible vocals have inspired millions of people worldwide.
But it wasn’t just your everyday folks that she touched with her music, some of the biggest names in the industry and world leaders also were touched by Aretha’s incredible talent.
Many celebrities took to social media to share their stories and respect for Aretha Franklin
Franklin’s star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame has become a shrine to the late singer
The star is now covered in flowers, messages, pictures and messages from adoring fans. She touched the hearts of millions and the world really has lost an incredible human being.
Aretha Franklin has done so much in her career. She’s performed with some of the greats, she’s worked as an activist, she has sang some of the greatest songs in the world and performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration.
But there’s one performance that still gives me goosebumps and brings a tear to my eye. So I would like to share it all with you.
The Late Show showed one of Aretha’s iconic performances on their show in celebration of the singer’s life. Aretha Franklin appeared at the Kennedy Center Honors event back in 2015 to honor American composer and singer-songwriter, Carole King. Stephen Colbert (host of The Late Show) hosted the event and he wanted his viewers to relive Aretha’s incredible performance with him.
For those who don’t know, Carole has written and/or co-written 118 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 list between 1955 and 1999. At the event, Aretha Franklin appeared to sing “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” which she had co-written with King.
Carole King had no idea that Aretha would be performing that night. Immediately, she began to cry as Aretha belted out the first line. You can see Carole bursting with pride, listening to the legend belt out a song they wrote together.
The performance moved the whole room; even Barack Obama was left shedding tears.
Before the song had even finished, she was receiving a standing ovation with the whole audience on their feet. That is the true force of a real diva and legend!
Aretha Franklin was a true superstar and it’s sad to think she’s no longer with us. But her spirit and her music will live on for centuries to come.
