2019’s Texas SandFest was like no other. The standard of sculptures was off the charts, and each one would amaze you or I. But the winning sculpture was extra special. Abraham Lincoln managed to walk away with a victory this year, despite being dead for over 150 years. Well, a sculpture of him did anyway.
Obviously Abraham Lincoln didn’t win any sort of competition in 2019, that was Damon Langlois. However, he did create his sand sculpture in the likeness of Abraham Lincoln. Things making more sense now?
His sculpture started life as, you guessed it, a massive pile of sand. This pile of sand, in fact:
Then Damon built a wooden frame around the pile. This seems like it was to compact the sand, make the sculpture stronger, and allow him to effectively sculpt it. Let’s be honest, it’s a lot more effort than we usually put into our sand castles at the beach. They usually involve a bucket, spade, and… That’s it.
You can slowly see the top of Abe’s famous face start to form, and it’s already clear that this is going to be massive. That’s if you didn’t get that from all the sand.
Et voila! There you have Damon’s winning entry to Texas SandFest 2019! He calls the sculpture “Liberty Crumbling”, and it’s mighty impressive. An astonishing 35,000 people came to see the sculptures this year in Port Aransas, Texas.
However, Damon isn’t the only winner. SandFest ensures it gives back to the community and raises funds for local charities every year. This year they raised an incredible $355,000, bringing their total to $1,261,750 over the last eight years. Congratulations to all involved.
What do you make of this impressive sculpture? We think it means something different to everyone who looks at it, but everyone can see the work that’s gone in. And what a way to honor the former President! Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and share with your friends and family if you enjoyed! You can also check out similar stories on Happiest.
