Christmas is a lot of people’s favourite time of the year and for 9 year old Jacob Thompson that is no exception. The problem is that for Jacob, he will likely not live to see this year’s celebrations.
At the tender age of 5 years old, Jacob was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer. After four years of an ongoing battle, it has spread to various areas of his body, including his head, and so he has had to be admitted to hospital indefinitely.
While they know that their time together is limited, Jacob and his family are intent on keeping hope in this difficult time and are doing all they can to make Jacob’s last days as enjoyable as possible.
Jacob’s favourite holiday is Christmas, understandably. The likelihood is that he won’t live to see the holidays, so his family and the nurses at the hospital have a plan to make sure he gets to enjoy his last Christmas; by celebrating it early this year.
The family are spending this weekend celebrating the magical holiday. They have decorated Jacob’s room and have arranged an early visit from Santa to entertain him and make it extra special. But on top of that, they have extended the invite to the public to make Jacob’s last Christmas that bit more special.
Jacob loves homemade Christmas cards and is asking for well wishers to send their own creations into him to make the weekend even more special. Jacob may be isolated in a hospital bed, but he still loves community and hopes that people will come together to extend good cheer.
More and more cards keep rolling in and people from out of town have sent in videos, with some people offering to sing Christmas carols on his special weekend.
It just goes to show that there is always light in the darkest of times and there is no better gift than love and support, no matter what time of year it is.
