Older siblings, look away now. New research has confirmed our worst fears. Our younger siblings are funnier than us. It has been scientifically proven. We’ve got no more excuses. What’s that? Do you want to see some proof? If you insist…
The research was conducted by YouGov and is based on asking people if they think they are funnier. Obviously, there will be some bias, but both older and younger siblings were asked so it seems pretty fair. The full list of personality traits can be found at the bottom of the page, and it makes for some interesting reading…
The data found that 46% of youngest children think they are the funniest. To contrast, only 36% of oldest siblings believe they are funnier than their younger counterparts.
That’s quite a big difference, but still leaves a slim margin of middle children who think they’re the funniest. We all know that isn’t the case, though.
The study states that “Splitting out the first and last born siblings in British families with more than one child (86 per cent of the population), a clear divide in personality traits emerges.”
The Serious Sibling
However, the statistics show another trend. Oldest siblings tend to find that they are overwhelmingly more responsible, organised, and successful. Maybe this is to do with self-confidence, or because they have had a couple of extra years to mature, get jobs, and achieve their goals than their younger siblings? Maybe being that bit younger helps you to be more carefree. We’ll never know for sure, but it’s clear that us oldest siblings are doing the hard work and keeping society on its feet while the rest of you crack jokes.
What do you think about the results? Are your younger siblings funnier than you? Are you funnier than your older siblings? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to tag them to prove the truth! You can always read similar stories here on Happiest.
