School picture day is one of those historic moments in a child’s life (well, for parents it is). The photos will last for years and all your family will get a copy so your parents want to make sure you look your best. But not every kid is as thrilled about picture day as the parents are.
Sometimes it can all go wrong; maybe you’ll blink at the wrong time, you might sneeze mid photo or not wear the most appropriate outfit.
For one young boy, he realized that his school picture day outfit choice probably wasn’t the smartest decision. But that bad decision will live with him for life now (though thankfully, his family all found it quite funny).
Carter Hutsell from Missouri was excited to start the first day of 7th grade. This means that school picture day was back to capture this milestone in these young kids’ lives.
A few days before school started, Carter and his mother, Laurel Boone Hutsell, discussed what shirt he should wear for his school picture day.
They both decided on a smart green shirt with a collar. Their reasoning was that it would look nice against the neutral grey or taupe background of the photo.
On the first day of school, Carter came home at the end of the day and told his mom how the photo went.
The first thing Carter says to me is “Mom, I shouldn’t have worn the green shirt for pictures. It will blend in with the green screen they used.” I respond with “They used a green screen? What?! I probably should have read some fine print. Maybe they will be ok.”
Unfortunately, it was not ok. Two days later, Laurel received an email notifying her that the photos were ready.
Eagerly, Laurel opened the link to see how her handsome young boy’s photos turned out – then she saw the results
As soon as I saw the proofs, I had to look again. Out loud I said to myself “Oh my gosh. He was right. That’s exactly what happened.” I could not stop laughing. Each picture was better than the next. The flags? That autumn scene with the fence?
Laurel was shocked to see her son’s head and arms floating in the middle of each stock-photo backdrop. Still, he gave an award-winning smile which made the photos even funnier.
Naturally, Laurel shared the photos from her son’s school picture day on Facebook and people could not stop laughing
After sharing the photos online, Carter’s mom started receiving texts and messages from her friends and family. When she showed Carter the photos, he burst out laughing and said “I told you” to his mom.
Come on, don’t tell me you wouldn’t have shared it too! Thankfully, Carter has thick skin and a good sense of humour so he didn’t mind. But Laurel certainly wished she knew that certain colours should not be worn for school photos in future.
Now a few days have gone by and we are having so much fun with this. I really can’t believe it’s all happening! I have received tons of messages from other moms, thanking me for sharing this #momfail and for making them laugh.
After checking over the documents before the school photo was taken, she noticed there was no fine print about not wearing green. I think the school must have thought that nobody would wear green.
We think the company’s policy may be changing after this hilarious mishap went viral.
Laurel tried her best to summarise the experience with a few motherly words of wisdom:
As moms, we do the best we can. We love our kids, we support. We encourage. And we try to prepare. But in the end, there’s a chance our kids will still have a floating head in a flag, autumn scene or brick wall. And that my friends, is a hilarious thing to be okay with.
We love a feel-good story, especially one like this that gave us all a good giggle. Carter and his family will most likely look at these photos fondly for years to come.
Who knows, they may even make wearing a green shirt a tradition. Going through your whole school life as just a floating head could be a new trend.
