There’s A Marathon In France Where Runners Drink Wine And Eat Cheese

Running a marathon is hard. Really hard. You need months of preparation, the ability to run for 26.2 miles, and plenty of hydration. However, this marathon in France (of course it’s in France) is turning hydration on its head.

Have you ever been running for about 13.1 miles and had another 13.1 miles to go and fancied a glass of wine? Or a nibble of cheese? Most of us on our daily runs would just turn around and head home at that point. But, those people running an official marathon would usually have to wait until they finished and then made their way home. That’s when you realise you’ve got nothing in the fridge, and have to go to the shop for wine and cheese.

However, that is not the case with this race. The Marathon du Medoc is held in Bordeaux, one of France’s famous wine regions. It’s a really beautiful area, full of manors, castles, and vineyards.

But rather than the usual water stations around the course, there are stops where you can grab a glass of vino or a nibble of cheese. In fact, it goes further than that. You can stop and have a rest for a whole wine tasting session.

There are also opportunities to sample oysters, ice cream, or local grapes along the route. Oh, and of course, like any good marathon, there is a prize for the best fancy dress costume. Maybe you could go as a bottle of wine…?

Just make sure that the alcohol doesn’t dehydrate you too much, so drink plenty of water, too. And the stalls are only there for the first six and a half hours of the race. So, if you’re a slowcoach like me, get the wine in early.
