Spina Bifida is a horrible disorder that can cause immense harm and pain to those who suffer from it. 2-year-old Roman Dinkel is one of those who suffer from it. Doctors diagnosed him with the disorder when he was in the womb. His mom Whitney Dinkel was 20 weeks pregnant when they found out.
Doctors performed surgery on Roman while he was still in his mother’s womb, to help his breathing and functional leg movements after birth. It wasn’t long before doctors came back to the parents-to-be with more news. Medical officials warned that Roman may never be able to walk, but Whitney and her husband Adam remained hopeful.
However, when Roman was born things didn’t look great. He used chiropractic and physical care at the hospital and eventually learned how to move with the aid of a walker. This was a big step for Roman’s mobility, but still wasn’t really walking. The brave kid kept making progress and soon moved on to using crutches.
His parents filmed this video after Roman had mastered walking with his crutches. He was most excited to tell his best friend Maggie, the family’s beautiful dog. “Look, Maggie! I’m walking Maggie!” you can hear him tell his canine friend.
Roman Dinkel has defied all odds to take his first steps, and maybe he’ll continue to improve. We certainly hope so. His Spina Bifida will not go away, and he will not beat it, but if he continues at this rate, he will learn to live his best life with the disorder and make it work around him!
