Syrian Refugee Opens Small Falafel Shop In Tennessee, Now It Has Been Voted ‘Nicest Place In America’

By - 25th October 2018

Do you ever go to an eatery and think to yourself, “Wow, this was a really great place!” Of course you do, but then do you think about what the nicest possible place to eat at would be? Well, now you don’t have to look any further because the ‘nicest place in America’ has been decided.

The good people at Reader’s Digest asked its fans what they think the nicest place in America is. And the winner was quite a surprise for most. The winner was a falafel shop in Tennessee ran by a Syrian refugee who came to America in the hopes of a better life.

Yassin’s Falafel House in Knoxville, Tennessee, won the competition and has now been listed as the ‘nicest place in America’ by Reader’s Digest. Yassin Terou is quite literally living the American dream.

Though there is a lot of adversity in America at the moment, seeing somebody who came to America to better the lives of his family and coming out on top is a real treat.

The Tennessee falafel eatery has been voted the ‘Nicest Place in America’

Though Terou and his family moved to America as Syrian refugees, they have become beloved members of their Knoxville community. Why? Because they serve up delicious food and a whole heap of human kindness.

When they came to America in 2011, Yassin and his family spoke very limited English and they had no friends or family to support them. They would attend their local mosque for food.

Soon after, Yassin decided he wanted to help others. So he began selling sandwiches at the mosque and people loved them so he set up his own falafel shop.

Yassin believes you should pay it forward in life and by spreading kindness you can change the world. He embraces people of all faiths, races, genders, and differences. Terou believes that he should accept others and be kind because he was treated kindly by the people of Tennessee when he first moved.

Breaking bread is not only food inside your stomach, it’s love you feel.

Yassin got a huge surprise when he met with Good Morning America to tell him he had made it as a top 10 finalist in the competition for the ‘nicest place in America’. However, what they didn’t tell him was that he had already been chosen as the winner.

But Yassin can do no wrong it would seem. His business already won a state peace award earlier in the year. They are the subjects of a short documentary produced by the founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey.

We are going to keep this country great and we are going to build it together.

Yassin believes his win wasn’t a personal victory. He believes that the kindness and warmth of the people of Knoxville and the kindness he received from America is what the true victory is.
