African Children Enjoy Snow For The Very First Time In Canada, And The Video Is Melting Millions Of Hearts

By - 13th November 2018

The first snow of the year is always exciting. It signals the official start of winter and, for children, it signals that Santa Claus will soon be on his way. But this year’s first snow in Canada was especially exciting for two children. This video of the moment two Eritrean children see snow for the first time has gone viral for all the right reasons.

Ripple Refugee Project is a Toronto-based group of private citizens who sponsor, settle and help integrate newcomers into Canada. Rebecca Davies, a spokesperson for the project, posted this video online and it has already been viewed over 1.85 million times on Twitter. When you see the video, you will understand why it is melting hearts all over the internet.

In the short video, we see two young Eritrean children run outside to enjoy the snowfall. Their youthful wonderment is beautiful to watch and their joy is infectious. They squeal with delight and run and jump about the backyard, and both try to catch the snowflakes in their hands.

Their family arrived just last Thursday from a refugee camp in Sudan. They had lived in the camp for the past five years, escaping violence in Eritria. The family includes a mother and her four children of 7, 5, 3 and 13 months old.

The uplifting video where the Eritrean children see snow for the first time was taken at Rebecca Davies’ house on Saturday, where the family are currently residing.

I looked up and there were big, fat snowflakes,” Davies said on Monday. “We had talked the day before about weather in Canada. So I called them and they all ran to the window.”

Two of the children ran away from the window, but the two in the video went downstairs, grabbed coats and boots out of a pile of unsorted donated clothing and headed outside. They ran, opened the big patio door themselves (which is a very hard and heavy door), and just ran out, and put their faces up to the sky and started twirling. – Rebecca Davies

The children’s mother was delighted to see her children enjoying the snow so much. Even she is curious about it, as Rebecca says, “It’s all new. There’s a huge curiosity of her own to see snow and touch snow and be in the moment herself.”

Even Canadian president, Justin Trudeau, has seen the video and tweeted a word of thanks to Rebecca.
