On April 9th, 2018, some seriously quick thinking from a brave 8-year-old girl called Malaiah ended up saving her life and her 3-year-old brother from a kidnapper.
Malaiah and her brother had gone for a drive in the car with their father, Rodney Cole in San Diego, California, where they live. The family had gone to a beauty supply warehouse for a quick trip to grab some bits.
It was a hot day outside and with it being a quick trip, Rodney left the kids with the car running and the air conditioning on. But it didn’t take long before somebody saw an opportunity.
In the 2 minute window where Rodney had left the car, a woman spotted the car
The woman spotted the two kids in the car and she immediately hopped in and began to drive. Malaiah recalls:
“She looked at the car and she saw it running and she saw kids in it. Then she just got in it and drive away.”
Rodney – still in the store at the time – spotted the woman driving away with his kids. Immediately, he ran into the street, screaming and pounding on the windows of his car.
Unfortunately, it was too late, the woman rolled up the windows and accelerated faster until Rodney couldn’t keep up with them.
Malaiah quickly remembered her dad gave her an emergency cell phone
Malaiah told the woman to take them back to her dad or she would call the police. The woman refused, so Malaiah called 911.
The kidnapper tried grabbing the phone from the young girl as she was talking to the dispatcher. But Malaiah was in the backseat so it was hard for the kidnapper to reach the phone.
“She said, ‘Give me the phone or I’m going to drive in circles and crash into the freeway wall,’”
Unfortunately, the little girl couldn’t identify where she was, but she did spot a sign which said “Mexico Border.” Malaiah told the dispatcher this information and luckily it was enough for the authorities to find them.
The police managed to stop the car just moments before the kidnapper crossed the border with the two children.
When Rodney heard his daughter talk about the encounter, it immediately brought him to tears. He was so proud of her bravery and quick thinking.
