Holidays are meant to be a time for fun and happiness and spending time with your family. But, this family’s holiday was turned on its head when the boat they were riding exploded. The freak accident happened while the Schaffer family were holidaying in the Bahamas. Mom Stacey was thrown 150 feet through the air and watched as her family were pulled out of the burning wreckage. All except one, her daughter Stefanie, a keen dancer.
“I could see where everyone was except for Stefanie. I feared the worst,” said Stacey. She saw her daughter being pulled from the wreckage, just about alive. “I just kept praying, ‘please don’t let her lose her legs. Please please please, let her keep her legs.'” But the family’s fears came true.
“I remember feeling a sense of panic,” Stefanie said. “And thinking in my head that I was dying.” Stefanie was a keen sportswoman and loved dancing, especially ballet. After a double amputation and five months in hospital, she would never dance again. But at least she escaped with her life.
The former dancer is looking for new sports and activities now she is healing up. Driving is out of the question, but she has a specially modified bike that she pedals with her arms. Stefanie is also very excited to start swimming again.
Her physiotherapy is coming a long way, and her trainer is impressed with her progress. So far, Stefanie only has one prosthetic, but her balance and strength are coming on well. It must take a lot of mental strength to come through this as well.
“It feels great to be in the water,” she said.
