No matter how old you get, a daughter will always be a daddy’s girl. When this loving father risked losing his baby girl far too soon, it turned his world upside down. So when she finally finished her first round of chemotherapy, he wanted to celebrate the occasion by showing her how special she is to him.
Chemotherapy is grueling for full-grown adults, so I can’t even imagine how hard it is for children. The strength and bravery they continuously show through these hard times are inspirational. 2-year-old Phoenix Thompson from Georgia has been undergoing chemotherapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Along with leukemia, tiny Phoenix also has MDS, which is a group of conditions that affect the blood. In children with MDS, their bone marrow doesn’t work properly; it creates abnormal blood cells and doesn’t produce enough regular blood cells.
Phoenix’s family have stayed strong throughout her treatment but it has been a tough ride. On top of caring for Phoenix, her parents also have four other siblings to take care of. But the family is “staying strong in their faith that the Lord will give Phoenix the strength to fight.”
Phoenix has recently completed her first round of chemotherapy and she has been such a brave little girl. Her dad, Brett, wanted to do something to commemorate the milestone, so he arranged a special surprise for her.
Brett turned up to the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta dressed in a suit and bow tie. He asked one of the nurses to take Phoenix a dress and have her dressed in it. He wanted his little princess to be ready for his arrival (and who better to dress his little princess as than Belle from Beauty & the Beast).
Phoenix’s mother, Christina, recorded the special moment and the heartwarming video is so emotional. It is such a beautiful moment as the daddy and daughter dance together to Tim McGraw’s ‘My Little Girl’. Brett couldn’t have chosen a more perfect song.
Today on Phee’s last day of chemo on her first round and Daddy came to visit. Little did we know he had some surprises for us. I mean honestly I don’t think I could have picked a better man for my kids. At 2 years old this is hard on her, on her family, and the people that love her. These little moments make these times not so hard. A nurse came in and was like ‘a volunteer dropped these dresses off’. I grabbed Phoenix one; I TOTALLY believed her, but really Brett had brought it. Brett thank you for being just what our children need. Did I mention she really loves her daddy?
Phoenix may still have a long road ahead to beat her cancer, but it is clear to see that she has a loving family around to support her. Every victory in this difficult journey is worth celebrating and Brett’s daddy and daughter dance was the perfect way to cheer up his brave little princess.
If you would like to donate to Phoenix’s journey to beating her cancer, then head over to her GoFundMe page. Watch the emotional video below to see their touching daddy and daughter dance. If this video doesn’t melt your heart, then I don’t know what will.
