Why Dogs Live Less Than Humans – Child’s Surprising Answer Has Now Been Shared 750 Thousand Times

By - 24th August 2018

We love our dogs. For some people, they love them more than other humans. It’s not hard to see why dogs are the perfect furry friend. This is what makes life especially hard when we have to say goodbye to our canine companions. We all want to know why dogs die so young.

It seems cruel for dogs not to live as long as humans. Why do we have to say goodbye so soon to our favorite creatures? One 6-year-old has found the answer and it’s surprisingly heartwarming.

We found a story online of a veterinarian who had been called to examine a 10-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. Ron, his wife Lisa and their little boy Shane were very attached to Belker so they were hoping for a miracle that he’d be okay.

Belker was dying of cancer. Unfortunately, the vet had to tell the family that they couldn’t do anything for Belker and they offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, the vet got the lump in her throat as she entered Belker’s family home. Lisa, Ron and Shane were all there, waiting for the procedure to put their dog to rest.

Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that dogs’ lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane had been listening quietly to the conversation before he piped up, “I know why,” he said.

Startled, the vet and Shane’s parents turned to look at him. What came out of the little boy’s mouth stunned everyone in the room. Shane’s reason for why dogs die so soon was truly beautiful. To the point where their grief turned into a warming sense of contentment.

People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right? Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.

How beautiful is this?! This little boy handled the death of his dog in the most poetic, philosophical and pure way that only a child would understand. Shane’s words really make you think, we should be more loving, caring and live life to the fullest.
