There aren’t many things in life that are sadder than a dog without a home. Thankfully, there are some really great shelters around the world to help accommodate these doggies until they find their forever homes.
The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in New York is one of these facilities. When gorgeous little Prince the pit bull entered the shelter, he was shivering and petrified of everyone and everything.
He once had an owner, but when that owner could no longer take care of him, Prince went to live with his owner’s girlfriend. Sadly, this didn’t last long. One day, the girlfriend was walking Prince who was 2 at the time. He managed to slip through his leash and run away.
Nobody knew where Prince the pit bull had gone until animal control picked him up and took him to the shelter back in April. The shelter staff managed to get in touch with the girlfriend. She said she’d pick up Prince to take him home with her but she never showed up. Prince has remained at the shelter ever since.
Maybe it was Prince’s unstable past that made him so nervous and skittish. It could have also been the hard adjustment to shelter life. Whatever it was, he was scared of almost everything.
“He took a long time to warm up to us,” Nancy Haynes, director of behaviour and enrichment at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society said.
Even when you approached his kennel, he would sit in the back and cower and shake. You would usually find him curled up in a ball at the back of his kennel.
The shelter staff managed to find something to make Prince’s stay a little more pleasant. In fact, it seemed to have calmed him down immensely.
