There’s nothing more adorable than seeing an elderly couple still very much in love. Through thick and thin, they stick together and help each other out through the bad times and the good. 84-year-old Des Monahan is a real sweetheart. This old man applies makeup for his wife when she starts to lose her eyesight.
This caring octogenarian loves his 83-year-old wife, Mona, and has done since the day they met. Mona feels at her most comfortable when she’s got a bit of makeup on to make her feel confident. But as her eyesight started to deteriorate, Des knew he had to do something to help.
“We don’t know when Mona will lose her sight completely but we didn’t want to wait around for it to happen.”
The pair met makeup artist, Rosie O’Driscoll, 43, in their local Debenham’s store. Rosie did a beautiful makeover for Mona one day and it made her feel confident and happy. Des knew that’s what he could do to make her smile.
Des began to practice his makeup skills for Mona with help from Rosie
He has been practising regularly and has been taking lessons from Rosie since October last year. Now, 8 months later, Des feels like he’s mastered his new skills where he can now do Mona’s makeup from the comfort of their own home. In fact, Des has become rather confident, so much so that he’s jokingly said he would teach his own masterclass.
Rosie is over the moon with Des’ progress. He can now confidently apply bronzer, blusher, lipstick, mascara and draw on eyebrows.
“After asking Rosie to do her make-up when we visited the Benefit counter I just picked up the brushes and started asking how to do it. Rosie has been a great friend to us and we go in daily to see her and so I can get more tips.”

“Mona’s eyesight is deteriorating and she won’t be able to do her make-up in the future so I thought the quicker I learnt the better. It all started last October but I am now so confident with using make-up that I could even teach my own class.”
Mona and Des are regular shoppers at Debenhams. It all started when the couple approached Rosie on the Benefit counter last year. Mona wanted to have her makeup done for a party they were going to later that night.
Des booked Mona in for a makeup session with Rosie. As she began, Des took some of the brushes off the counter and began to watch Rosie intensely. From that moment, she realised that she wasn’t just doing makeup, she had found herself a student who wanted to learn.
“Des took the brushes and said ‘that’s easy, I can to do that’. They are such a lovely couple and Des loved learning how to help Mona from the very beginning. It was obvious Mona was losing her sight and he wanted to help her in any way he could.”
Rosie knew from her years of industry experience that makeup helps give people a boost of confidence and sense of identity.
“I’m thrilled that Des now has the confidence to start trialling new looks. When we first started he had no idea what brushes to use for each part of the face but now he’s an expert.”
Des isn’t just Rosie’s student, the trio have now all become very close friends
Rosie considers Mona and Des to be personal friends now. “We have such a laugh when they come onto the counter at Benefit but we are friends outside of Debenhams too.”
Rosie has been to their house for a cup of tea and the couple come to the store most days for a catch-up and a chat. It goes to show that no matter what age or gender you are, there are always new skills to learn in life.
“If Des doesn’t like a certain lipstick colour on Mona he’ll tell me straight away. He prefers using a pencil to draw in her brows and is very particular with the looks we try on his wife.”
Before meeting Rosie, Des had never picked up a makeup brush and now he’s a seasoned professional. Rosie is so proud of Des’ progress. She thinks it’s one of the most loving things he could do for his wife.
An old man applies makeup to his wife and he’s started to inspire others to do the same. It’s a simple thing that means a lot to his wife.
“We’ve had so many older people come into see us at the Benefit counter since Des started. Benefit make-up is for people of any age, this story gets the message across that no matter your age it’s always important to look and feel nice. Des and Mona are madly in love with each other and it’s amazing to help share their story.”
Of course, Mona is absolutely thrilled with her husband’s handiwork. At no point did he ever feel embarrassed with learning, even in the middle of a busy shop.
“Des uses eyeliners and lipsticks I wouldn’t be able to use myself. I struggle to see the colours of different shades now. But thanks to Des I now know my makeup will always look great.
