Hearing a child’s first words is a special moment, but it is made even more special when you’ve been waiting 5 years to hear them.
For Briana Blankenship, she wondered if the day would ever come where her daughter, Taylor, would begin to speak. 5-year-old Taylor was diagnosed by doctors with nonverbal autism, meaning that she doesn’t communicate through speech. She understands bits of the English language but she doesn’t have the capacity to respond and string sentences together.
But that was all about to change. As Briana and Taylor sat in their car at the McDonalds drive-thru, Briana got a massive shock that left her in tears.
I am ugly crying in the McDonald’s parking lot and the employees probably think I’m crazy. In the drive-thru, I suddenly heard Taylor say ‘MAMA.’ For those of you that don’t know, Taylor is five and is nonverbal autistic. She has NEVER said a word. EVER.
Amazed by Taylor’s sudden outburst, Briana grabbed her phone and started recording. She didn’t care if she held up the drive-thru line; she had to get proof of what just happened. She never thought the day would come where she would hear her daughter speak, let alone say ‘mama’.
Taylor’s first word gives hope that one day she will be able to communicate just like any other child. Taylor has a long way to go, but this miraculous moment is the first step towards a brighter future.
